With tasks and schedules piling up, exercise often slips down the priority list. On this World Physiotherapy Day, SPD’s physiotherapists take us back to basics and highlight a simple yet powerful truth: doing some physical activity is always better than none.

According to SPD physiotherapist Niel Dagle Casio, all it takes is 60 seconds to get moving. In physical therapy, a single minute can mark the beginning of a life-changing journey toward mobility, independence, and long-term health.

Whether it is taking 100 steps, cycling on an outdoor exercise machine, or doing simple seated arm stretches, movement at any age transforms lives.

Start with small steps

Physical activity is not about immediate intensity, but about consistent momentum. Starting with small, manageable amounts of daily movement allows individuals, especially seniors and people with disabilities, to build strength and confidence safely. The benefits compound quickly:

  1. Improves Independence: Regular physical activity helps maintain the strength and balance required for everyday tasks, allowing individuals to navigate their homes and communities with confidence.
  2. Enhances Quality of Life: Movement boosts mental wellness, enhances joint mobility, and keeps individuals connected to their surroundings.
  3. Reduces Health Risks: Staying active early and consistently helps lower the risk of serious health events such as heart attacks and strokes.

Drop the procrastination

Fancy equipment or hours of free time is not needed to get started. Here is how to incorporate meaningful movement into your routine:

  1. Start Small: Begin with just one minute of stretching, light hand-weight exercises, or simple walking routines.
  2. Build Gradually: Incrementally increase your movement time and complexity as your strength improves.
  3. Focus on Consistency: A few short movement sessions throughout the day add up to significant long-term health benefits.

Movement is a lifelong investment in your freedom and health. Keep moving, stay active, and celebrate every step forward.
