In the lead up to National Day, we asked some of our staff and clients to share their favourite memories of the occasion.
Mohamed Hussain, SPD Artisan Collab craftsman: It is always heartwarming to see everyone come together, donned in red and white, to celebrate the nation’s birthday. Those years when I participated in the National Day Parade’s marching contingent and wheelchair dancing are some of my favourite memories of this special occasion. I hope to have another opportunity to participate in these performances again!
Ismawati Binte Selamat, EIPIC teacher: In 2018, my family and I had the chance to watch the National Day Parade at The Float@Marina Bay. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the performances. We also witnessed the Singapore Navy’s combat divers free-falling into the Marina Bay waters and of course, the Red Lions! The night ended with spectacular fireworks which, to us, was the highlight of the celebrations. Happy Birthday, Singapore!
Brenda Khoo, Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholarship recipient: My most memorable National Day is when I was in Sec 3/4 at CHIJ St Nicholas Girls’ School. I was asked by my history teacher, Ms Sharon Law, to recite the pledge in front of the whole school during our school’s National Day celebration. I felt very proud of being a Singaporean as I recited the words of the pledge, because I believe that without Singapore’s educational policy, I wouldn’t be where I am today in terms of intellectual curiosity.
Bryant Ting, occupational therapist: Back in my primary and secondary school days, my friends and I used to sing the National Day songs together during the celebrations. I may not remember all the songs by heart now, but the memories and friendships forged are what made me feel so deeply rooted and call Singapore home. Happy birthday, Singapore!
Marieta Xaviera Furtado, EIPIC teacher: My favourite National Day memory is the year when my friends and I gathered at the Padang, dressed in red and white, to watch the fireworks at the Float@Marina Bay. It was heartwarming to see everyone, regardless of race, religion and abilities, watch the parade, fighter jets and fireworks, as a united country.
Eng Jit Yee, senior physiotherapist: My favourite National Day memory is watching the stunning fireworks in the comfort of my home last year. It was one-of-a-kind experience as I did not need to travel far to join the celebrations.
