SPD-HOPE Education Programme for People with Disabilities

Adrian Tan Zeng Yi’s mother had to give up her job so that she can take him to school everyday. Adrian, who suffers from Athetoid Cerebal Palsy, is jerky and erratic in his movements. He cannot feed himself without dirtying his clothes and has difficulty holding a pen to write or a book to read. In spite of this, the secondary two pupil loves to study and wants to be a computer engineer.

School Holidays Well Spent Learning New Skills and Helping the Disabled

14 Secondary Two students of Hai Sing Catholic take turns to come to The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) every week to refurbish used computers for distribution to the needy disabled. This initiative by the students is on top of the required Community Involvement Programme implemented by the Ministry of Education.

Pilot Project to Help Bridge the Digital Divide and Create Job Opportunities for the Disabled

Twenty-eight year old Gary Woon can now look forward to being able to find employment. A tetraplegic, Gary has been unemployed for 7 years after a traffic accident. Owing to the mobility problem sustained in the accident, he was not able to use the public transport or afford expensive taxi rides to travel to the workplace. Today, Gary will be able to work in the virtual environment after completing a web design course with The Society for the Physically Disabled.

People with Physical Disabilities Partner Young Rotarians for a Good Cause

Since August, Lee Seng Ngiap, a beneficiary of The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) and his friends have been working non-stop to make refrigerator magnets, scented star candles, tea light candles and copper wire card holders in preparation for a special “Christmas Cheer 2002” charity drive.
