To increase understanding, acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities, SPD is commissioning a five-part info-educational series that will focus on the lives of and challenges faced by people with disabilities. ‘亮点人生 真情无障碍’ or ‘Breaking Barriers, Unlocking Potentials’ is done in conjunction with International Day of Persons with Disabilities and will be aired every Saturday from 29 November 2008 over Channel 8 at 9pm to 9.30pm. Hosted by Guo Liang, it will feature a few people with disabilities, the challenges they face and how they have or are working to overcome these, as well as the services available to help them.

Launch of new disability resource handbook to guide mainstream educators on how to integrate physically disabled students in schools. Needy disabled students to be given $300 more each year for essential services. More than $165,200 in financial aid to be given out to over 150 needy students with physical disabilities and students with physically disabled parents. A new handbook will be made available to guide teachers and other educators on how to interact with and integrate physically disabled students in the schools.

From now till December 2010, Aussino Home Fashions and the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) are collaborating in the ‘Making Dreams Possible’ campaign to raise $100,000 in aid of SPD’s programmes and services. This year-long campaign will start off with a charity sale of a series of specially-designed bed linens, polar fleece, bath towels, bath mats, cushion covers, mugs and carriers that cost between $5 to $10 each. They will be available at all Aussino outlets from 15 June 2009 onwards while stocks last. Another four more designs will be incorporated into Aussino’s annual fall/winter flyer towards the end of the year.

From October 2009, the elderly and people with disabilities are able to receive affordable professional speech therapy services in community-based organisations to help them with their swallowing problems. Launched by the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD), the Dysphagia Management Programme (DMP) is the first community-based swallowing management programme.
