Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholars Lauded for Resilience in Overcoming Challenges

Achieving academic excellence over and above facing challenges from disabling conditions and having to deal with bullying, taunting and even a life threatening situation were what made three young Singaporeans stand out among others to be awarded the Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities. They received their awards from Guest-of-Honour Ms Low Yen Ling, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Industry & Ministry of Education and Mayor, South West District in a ceremony held at the SPD Ability Centre.

Students with Disabilities Awarded the Microsoft YouthSpark Scholarship to Pursue Higher Education in IT Fields

Five scholarships were awarded to outstanding young Singaporeans with disabilities at the Microsoft YouthSpark Scholarship Awards Ceremony 2015 today, up from the four scholarships disbursed annually in previous years. Given to students who demonstrate excellent academic credentials, strong leadership potential and a passion for higher learning, this year’s scholarship recipients impressed the judging panel with their inspiring display of strength, courage and resilience in overcoming a variety of physical and sensory challenges, including macular dystrophy (vision impairment), hearing impairment, osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones disease) and Asperger’s syndrome.

SPD Thanks All Supporters for Donating to the SPD Charity Show 2015

SPD, an organisation that helps people with disabilities, has raised over $4.8 million so far through the SPD Charity Show 2015 telecast ‘live’ on television last night, exceeding the $3.5 million target that was set for the show. This includes the $32,000 that was collected at the show’s outdoor segment – a three-hour Getai performance at Ang Mo Kio Central Stage – a first for the show.

David Lim, leader of Singapore’s first Mt. Everest Expedition, as you may recall was struck down by a rare and serious nerve disorder shortly after returning from the successful Mt. Everest Expedition. He was paralysed from the eyes down and spent six months in hospital. Now, a year after his discharge, and partially disabled himself, David is returning to the mountains.

Tanjong Pagar CDC District Raised $118,000 For The Disabled Through Recycling

Residents from the Tanjong Pagar CDC District has raised $118,000 to help the disabled, simply by recycling their waste. This is part of the SPD Green Earth Programme, an activity organised by The Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) which aims to help the disabled, protect the environment and care for the community.
