More Than 1,000 People of Different Abilities Turn Up at SPD’s First Walkathon in Support of Persons With Disabilities

More than 1,000 participants, with and without disabilities, turned up at the inaugural SPD Ability Fun Walk held at the Punggol Waterway Park this morning as a show of support for people with special needs. Flagged off by Dr Janil Puthucheary, Minister of State for Communications and Information, and Education, as well as Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris – Punggol GRC, the walkathon raised close to $200,000 for SPD that will be channeled to fund programmes that help persons with disabilities to be independent and self-reliant.

Walk the Talk. Join in SPD’s First Charity Walk.

SPD will hold its first SPD Ability Fun Walk at the Punggol Waterway Park on 10 September 2016. The walk serves to promote inclusion by providing an opportunity for the general public and people with special needs to walk together as a united community for a worthy cause. In line with the walk’s theme “Happy Hatters on the Loose”, participants will receive in their walk pack a bright yellow and green-striped top hat on which they are encouraged to decorate and put their stamp. Photo stands will also be set up to enable participants to capture and share photographs.

SPD Awarded Three-Year CARF Accreditation for its Community-Based Outpatient Medical Rehabilitation Programmes

SPD has been awarded a three-year accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) International. This accreditation, which was awarded to SPD for its therapy programmes, namely the Continuing Therapy Programme (CTP) and SPD Rehabilitation Centres, makes SPD Singapore’s first outpatient medical rehabilitation centre for children and adults to receive the accreditation.

SPD’s Inaugural Charity Golf Tournament Raises Over $240,000 to Benefit People with Disabilities

SPD organised its first charity golf tournament last Friday at the Raffles Country Club with strong support from the business community. Close to 30 companies came together to raise more than $240,000 through sponsorship of golf flights and donations. The funds raised will go towards funding SPD’s programmes and services to benefit people with disabilities. Guest-of-Honour, Minister for Manpower and Member of Parliament for East Coast GRC, Mr Lim Swee Say, led the tee-off with 106 golfers in the 27-flight event.

Japanese Welfare Foundation Makes Work at the SPD Sheltered Workshop Safer and More Efficient for People with Disabilities

People with disabilities are a potential pool of talent to tap on for employment. In many cases, simple modifications and improvements to a working environment can help to develop this potential. With that in mind, Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Welfare Foundation generously donated $10,000 for the purchase of wheelchairs, plastic pallets, cage trolleys and storage cartons for SPD’s Sheltered Workshop to help its trainees go about their work better.
