22-year-old Daniel Lai was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder at a young age. He started his education journey at a special education school, which provided a supportive environment for his early development. At age seven, he transitioned to mainstream school – a shift that brought significant challenges.
Daniel struggled initially in the new environment as he could not focus and would start flicking the classroom lights out of boredom and distracting the whole class. These behaviours were corrected by a teacher who was familiar with supporting students with developmental needs. The teacher taught him social norms and why they mattered, leading Daniel to understand social boundaries better.
Despite the initial hurdles, Daniel’s did exceedingly well in his studies, and his efforts were recognised through acceptance into the Gifted Education Programme (GEP) and a scholarship to NUS High School.
In spite of financial hardships and uncertainties about future support, Daniel persevered, managing language and expression difficulties under the guidance of dedicated teachers, and learning to effectively communicate and manage his deadlines. His initiative and ability to manage responsibilities were further tested during National Service, where he used his free time to take on extra tasks to support his superiors, showcasing his drive to contribute meaningfully.
Daniel was awarded the Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) Foundation Scholarship in September 2024 to support his studies at National University of Singapore (NUS). His decision to study computing at NUS stems from his belief in its potential to solve problems and create systematic solutions that benefit others.
One of his earliest accessibility projects at NUS was on mapping. He was driven by a passion to enhance accessibility and contribute meaningfully through his capabilities. This interest led him to become appointed the Engagements Head at NUS Enablers.
“This scholarship is a recognition of my efforts and commitment despite my disability. I hope to be able to continue to help improve accessibility for people with disabilities by working in organisations that design user-friendly and inclusive solutions for all,” said Daniel.
Daniel has shown that challenges can be opportunities for growth and leadership. His story serves as an inspiring reminder of the potential within each individual to make a positive impact.
