The SPD Service Excellence Award (SEA) is a quarterly award given to SPD staff. The award aims to inculcate a service-centric culture within the organisation, and to acknowledge and reward staff for giving their best in delivering exemplary service. The winners for this quarter were announced at a staff event on 3 November and they are senior social worker, Angela Chung, occupational therapist, Sheena Astilla, training officer, Shahidah Lam, and senior communications manager, Geraldine Lai. The Commendation for Service Excellence Award was also given to both Nurul Fatin Binte Khairudin and Julie Law.

Close to 40 children from SPD’s Building Bridges EIPIC Centres benefited from a vision screening conducted by Ngee Ann Polytechnic at SPD@Jurong on 11 November 2017. The children were tested for their eyesight, visual alignment, colour vision, as well as 3D-vision.

There could be a myriad of issues that may affect anyone, such as having to take care of a loved one with special needs or disability, or the demise of someone very dear. SPD received the Charity Transparency Award (CTA) from Ms Yeoh Chee Yan, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, at the Charity Transparency and Awards Ceremony on 15 November 2017. The ceremony was held at the Singapore Marriot Tang Plaza Hotel.

It was a sea of purple as the crowd gathered in support of inclusion and the celebration of the different abilities of persons with special needs. For the fifth year running, the Purple Parade continued its movement at Suntec City on 28 October with close to 10,000 participants. A supporter of the Purple Parade and what it stands for, SPD was a member of the working committee for the second year. SPD was also one of the 50 contingents that took part in the parade march, along with its parade partner, Hewlett Packard (HP) Enterprise.

The Speech Therapy (ST) Week is celebrated annually in Singapore and this year’s celebrations at SPD were filled with activities aimed at getting people to find out more about the profession. This year’s ST Week fell between 30 October and 3 November and activities were planned according to the theme “We Care: Communication and Swallowing Health”.

Celebrating Life’s Every Triumph – Lee Ci En

Despite his diminutive stature, Lee Ci En stands tall with his gregarious personality and unfailing optimism. The 21-year-old was born with Achondroplasia, a form of short-limbed dwarfism, and he has since overcome his fair share of prejudice because of his condition. His story is one that has encouraged many, and will continue to bring much hope to the people going through a similar journey.
