At seven, Joshua was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma, which resulted in tunnel vision. His condition deteriorated over the years to a point that his doctor had to give him the grimmest of reports, advising him to consider a career as a masseuse. Instead, he chose a distinctly different path. This is the story of Joshua Tseng, one of our APB Foundation Scholars this year.

The SPD EIPIC Sports Day 2017 returned with a bigger turn-out this year. Over 170 children and 360 family members from the four Building Bridges EIPIC Centres gathered at Fuhua Primary School last Friday, 6 October, for a day of fun and games. The annual event aimed to provide opportunities for social interaction and bonding among the children, their families and SPD staff. It also served as a platform to promote a healthy lifestyle through various sports activities as well as inclusion in the society.

SPD’s Rehabilitation Programme Gets a Boost from Tote Board Funding

SPD was presented with the Certificate of Grant Award by Minister of Social Family Development, Mr Desmond Lee, at the Enabling Village on 29 September. Under the Tote Board - Enabling Lives Initiative, the Transition To Employment (TTE) programme, which began as a pilot project in 2014, will be further funded for another two years from 1 October 2017.

DSO Modifies Musical Instruments for Children with Special Needs

Having partnered SPD last year to modify toys for children from SPD’s Building Bridges EIPIC Centres, the dedicated staff and engineers from DSO National Laboratories took it up a notch this year to adapt musical instruments for the children, and allowing those with higher needs to participate in a musical performance at the year-end graduation ceremony. The idea of modifying musical instruments was shared with DSO engineers from the “Mod Squad” in discussions that took place in January this year as it was difficult them find off-the-shelves that are suitable for children with special needs.

Kristina Liu, a recipient of our Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholarship personifies all of the above.. Currently a first-year undergraduate at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistics and Multi-lingual Studies, Kristina is an inspiration to many. You would not have noticed anything different about her. The only difference is not on the outside, but the spirit she carries on the inside. This is the story of Kristina Liu.
