President Halimah Yacob is SPD's Patron

SPD is pleased to announce that Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore, has accepted the invitation to become the charity’s patron. President Halimah has long been acquainted with SPD and its cause through her work at the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2012. More recently, she attended the SPD Education Programme Awards Presentation Ceremony in January as the Guest-of-Honour.

The SPD Sheltered Workshop offers vocational training that helps prepare people with disabilities for employment. Located at the second level of the SPD Ability Centre, the workshop brings in small contract work such as packing, data entry and digital archival services to simulate real work environment and develop the trainees’ hard and soft skills. During the AGM, SPD president Ms Chia Yong Yong shared SPD’s key highlights and achievements for FY2017/2018 in her report to members. These included increased collaborations with mainstream schools and partnerships with public agencies in public education and projects.

His Time as a Volunteer – John Harris

Mr John Harris was one of our long-serving volunteers. He first stumbled upon SPD because he lived in the neighbourhood and decided to sign up as a volunteer. John started out volunteering with us on an ad-hoc basis but later volunteered regularly at the Day Activity Centre (DAC). Over the span of two years, the 62-year-old American clocked over 150 hours of voluntary work and made a difference in the lives of the DAC clients.

Celebrating Life’s Every Triumph – Haikal Johari

Mr Muhammad Haikal Johari was riding high in a career in Thailand’s culinary scene when a motorcycle accident in 2015 changed it all. Doctors said that he would be paralysed for life from the spinal cord injuries that he sustained. Two and a half years on, Haikal defied doctors’ prognosis and could walk again with some assistance. A chef by profession, he also went on to start his own restaurant. He shares more of his story with SPD’s senior advocacy analyst Poh Sho Siam.
