Ushering in the Year of the Goat
We always get a little busier during the Chinese New Year period and it is no different this year as staff, volunteers and clients celebrate the occasion in their own unique ways!
Soka volunteers and DAC clients’ visit to Chinatown
A visit to Chinatown during the Chinese New Year period to soak in the festive atmosphere has become a tradition for our regular volunteers from the Singapore Soka Association and our clients from the Day Activity Centre (DAC). Although the Soka volunteers have been organising these trips for as long as anyone can remember, everyone would still eagerly look forward to these annual outings with this year’s trip taking place on 5 February.
Togetherness at SPD@Jurong
Whenever the subject of Chinese New Year comes up, gatherings of family and friends would pop up in our minds. That’s what the SPD@Jurong family did on 17 February - a simple yet cosy gathering where everyone got together to celebrate Chinese New Year with the traditional ‘lo hei’ and pizza on the side.
DAC learns about the significance of Chinese New Year
Clients at the DAC got to learn more about the significance of the Chinese New Year and its traditions on 17 February. Guided by their training officers, the clients brought laughter to their peers with their convincing skit, lion dance and a traditional Chinese dance. The two “Da Tou Wa Wa” (Big Head Doll) and props that were used during the performances deserve special mentions as they were made by the DAC team.
ACS thanks SPD staff, volunteers, beneficiaries and caregivers
More than 30 students and teachers from Anglo-Chinese School (ACS) family of schools visited SPD Ability Centre and SPD@Toa Payoh on Chinese New Year’s Eve to wish everyone a “Happy New Year” and presented each with a pair of mandarin oranges.
This surprise visit was organised by the school as part of their ‘ACS Thanks You’ community service initiative to express their appreciation to community groups for contributing to Singapore’s economy and social development.
