The covet trophies at the annual DAC Singing Competition

The atmosphere at the SPD Day Activity Centre (DAC) last Friday was boisterous, mixed with some level of anxiety. In it were 60 people with disabilities, dressed to the nines, waiting to go on stage to present their best vocals to the panel of judges, their peers, as well as family members and SPD staff who turned up to show their support for the annual DAC singing competition.

Trained fortnightly by long-time volunteers, Ms Frances Chua and her friends from Vocal Heart, the participants belted out popular tunes from different music genres – from the evergreens and rock, to English and Mandarin pop.

“We have seen a number of our clients coming out of their shelves and gaining more confidence through music. The camaraderie among the clients was especially heartening. Their mutual encouragement and the cheering for each other was heartfelt,” said Ms Susan Teo, who manages SPD's DAC.
