Commemorating World Physiotherapy Day 2017
SPD celebrated World Physiotherapy Day from 22 August 2017 to 6 September 2017, engaging staff in activities such as taking the stairs and walking more. The day is commemorated annually on 8 September and serves as an opportunity for physiotherapists from all over the world to raise awareness of the crucial role of the profession in keeping people well, mobile and independent.
This year’s message - “Movement for Health: Physical Activity for Life” - aims to show how physiotherapists can help keep people of all ages active physically, wherever they may be.
Activities conducted at SPD Ability Centre for the occasion centred on this theme. Participants earned up to ten points for every flight of stairs or ramp climbed, with those with the highest points standing a chance to win shopping vouchers.
During the two weeks of activities, physiotherapists could be seen encouraging staff to take part in the challenges, and many did. There were over 20 participants who climbed stairs and worked out using the equipment at the rehabilitation centre. The activities were chosen for the ease in which they can be done in our daily life. The availability of a gym in our vicinity is also an added incentive for people to work-out in their free time. They also helped to reinforce the following messages:
• All healthy adults need to be physically active
• Physiotherapists can help integrate physical activities into daily living
• Physiotherapists can advise on activities for people of all ages
“Physiotherapists help to keep the general population active by incorporating intervention routines that maximise their strength and mobility. Through sound advice and exercise programmes, we aim to support people of all ages in achieving activity goals,” said Teng Cher Wei, a physiotherapist from SPD’s Therapy Hub.
We take this opportunity to thank all the physiotherapists for the wonderful work they do.
