Celebrating Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists (OT) play an important role in the rehabilitation journey of those coping with some form of impairment. Many health and community care organisations around the world recognise the contributions of OTs and dedicate a day every year to the profession. SPD is no exception.

The SPD OT Day 2016 committee came up with a series of activities to raise awareness and educate the staff on what the profession encompasses. Quizzes and poster presentations were rolled out from as early as October last year. It all culminated in a day of learning through fun activities at the various SPD centres in January 2016.

Games that challenged one’s motor and cognitive skills were planned for the staff at the SPD Ability Centre on 8 January, while similar activities took place at SPD@Tampines, SPD@Toa Payoh and SPD@Jurong on 12 January, 13 January and 14 January respectively.

The activities allowed staff to have a better understanding of the difficulties that clients undergoing occupational therapy face and appreciating the care and services rendered to them by the OTs.

“The event was fun and an eye-opener. It helps us to appreciate the work of our OTs better,” said Tommy Tng, senior manager of SPD’s Sheltered Workshop.
