Caregivers Loosen Up on Wellness Day

Create, Express, Relax - these words were central to the theme for this year’s Caregivers’ Wellness Day organised by SPD’s Community and Social Service Department (CSSD). Held at the SPD Ability Centre on 17 March, the event provided an opportunity for caregivers to unwind, make new friends, and enjoy an afternoon of fun and rest.

The chalk art workshop was one of the programme’s highlights. Participants young and old found the chalk colouring activity therapeutic and relaxing, especially when accompanied with soothing music. It was especially heartening to see clients and their family members bond through their artwork. Through the workshop, our guests learned that art could be simple, inexpensive, and enjoyable.

Ms Angelyn Tan, a Specialised Case Management Programme (SCMP) client, was also invited to share her love for art and how she de-stressed through painting and sketching. Having learnt painting and fashion design at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Angelyn was working in a kindergarten when she had a stroke about 18 years ago. She did not let her disability get her down. Angelyn continued to paint and draw as a form of creative expression and relaxation. Being focused on her passion has helped her maintain a cheerful outlook till today.

The 25 participants were treated to a high tea buffet and a soothing neck and shoulder massage by a group of qualified masseuses with visual impairments.

Event participant Mdm Lee Ai Khim, a devoted caregiver to her husband, who is a stroke survivor, said: “I really enjoyed this event as I got to talk to a lot of people. I feel more relaxed! Now I will let my husband do the colouring at home. He is also very happy.”

Special thanks to Tan Chin Tuan Foundation for their generous support towards our caregiver engagement activities. Stay tuned for more caregivers events coming your way.
