Asia Pacific Breweries Foundation Scholarship for Persons with Disabilities

Dickson was born legally blind with Leber’s congenital amaurosis, a rare degenerative disease that results in severe loss of vision. He is unable to read fine print and hence, uses a magnifier for printed text and a screen reader when using the computer. His eyes are also sensitive to sunlight.

Dickson did not allow his disability to hinder his education and learning.

In Secondary School, he received the Edusave bursary awards in 2007 and 2008, as well as an academic award for topping his cohort in History in 2007. Dickson was also active in the school band and the St John’s Ambulance Brigade.

Dickson went on to be the first legally blind student in Singapore to pursue a diploma education at Nanyang Polytechnic. There, he took up business management studies and specialised in human resource management. He made it to the Director’s List for four consecutive semesters from 2011 to 2013 and achieved a GPA score of 3.92.

Currently a final-year Bachelor of Computing in Computer Science student at the National University of Singapore (NUS School of Computing), Dickson represents Singapore at accessibility conferences. He interned at Singtel IT and GovTech and is also the co-lead for Theseabilities’ Web & Mobile Accessibility Initiative. Dickson hopes to come up with an invention that would help improve the lives of people with visual impairments.
